Older
Business News - Winter 2011 and Earlier

have quietly appeared in the Coldwater Executive Suites:
Web
Triangle, LLC; Employment
Plus, Inc.; and New
Concept Weight Loss.
- The
mystery of the newly refurbished old PVS Automotive /
Capital Auto building is solved: It is now open as "Valle's
Auto
Repair".
- A
new accountant, Pavlov
& Associates, has opened in to the former
Education Station location downtown (near Taylor's).
- Planned
Parenthood, after having been closed for a while,
has now re-opened in Coldwater, and has chosen the old
A.M. Mandahar office (across from the post office) as
their location.
- The
Sportsman's Shack, which also had been closed for
a while (they were formerly in a building by Rotary
Park), has re-opened in the old ColorTyme and Pet
Supplies Plus stores (by Gander
Mountain).
- A
new Verizon
cell phone dealer has opened right next to the Sprint
cell phone dealer (in the same strip mall as Dollar
Tree).
- A
new employment agency "Employment Plus" has moved in to
the Coldwater Executive Suites (28 W. Chicago St.) in
Suite 2C-1.
Moved...

- These businesses
have disappeared from the Coldwater Executive Suites and
are assumed to be out of business: Freije Treatment
Systems, Elite Medical Laser Spa, and Sensible Health
Alternatives
Other News...
- The
Felpausch grocery store has been renamed Family Fare.
- The
old Postula Computer Services building by McDonald's has
been razed (Postula remains open as a home-based
business).
- After
almost
2
years,
Verizon,
which
had
bought
out Alltel, is finally rebranding the Coldwater market.
Expect local Alltel agents to change their signs to
Verizon this winter and spring.
- Interesting
news
item:
Willowbrook
Plaza
(as
a
whole)
gone into foreclosure and was set for auction on March
3rd.
- According
to
two
reader tips, Chuck Wood, the owner of Jeannie's Diner,
has purchased Martell's (at the golf club) and renamed
it "The Clubhouse."
Fall 2010
Hello...
- A new Game Stop
store has opened next to Buffalo Wild Wings.
Moved...
- Sometime soon, Maurices
will be moving from the Willowbrook Plaza to the former Gliks
location (same strip mall as Buffalo Wild Wings and Game
Stop); build-out is underway right now.
Goodbye...
- Sometime over the
summer, PVS Automotive quietly closed. Since then the building
has been totally and beautifully refurbished, but there is no
indication of the new tenant yet.
- With the owner facing
imprisonment, Crossroads Alignment is effectively closed. This
puts me in a somewhat embarassing situation as Crossroads has
been a MyColdwater.com supporter; please click
here to read my official response to this tragedy.
- Style Studio (also once
known as In Style School of Cosmetology) has closed and
converted its building to residential apartments.
- J & M Tattoos has
vacated its store in Fairfield Plaza and is apparently out of

- The Sportsman's Shack (by
Rotary Park) has apparently gone out of business.
- Sometime in the last year,
MHE Materials Handling (at intersection of Chicago &
Wright) appears to have quietly vacated their building without
my noticing.
Other News...
- Coach House Rehab Center
(265 N. Michigan) has joined Hope Network and has been renamed
Hope Network Rehabilitation Services.
- The Speedway gas station by
Walmart was closed for about a month for renovations - a
walk-in "beer cave" was added. It is open again for business.
- After 2 1/2 years, plans
are finally going ahead for the refurbishing of the Kerr
Building downtown. Some air holes have been cut in the
building and workers were also seen taking measurements,
though nothing more has been started yet. The history of this
project is as follows: In 2008, it was announced that a new
restaurant would be going in the Kerr building, but then
nothing happened the rest of the year. In April 2009, the
Daily Reporter reported that the project did not fall through
but that it was just proceeding very slow. The purchaser (who
is probably JM Wingard, LLC) was applying for state government
funding for part of the project. The project was slated for
completion "in early 2010," but obviously it's going to go
well into 2011 at the very least. UPDATE: Please see the Kerr Building Renovation Update page
for all the latest information.
- The owner of Postula
Computer Services has sold his building and property (by
McDonald's) and is now operating a home-based business.
- Q-1 Video has placed their
building up for sale for a potential move, but they are
remaining open while they look for a buyer.
- The owner of the Sauk Trail
Trading Post and the owner of Coldwater Cleaners have each
placed their entire business up for sale, but they remain open
during the search for a buyer.
- Dan Dobson of the downtown
State Farm office retired at the end of September; John Fulmer
is the new agent taking over the office.
Summer 2010
Hello...
- A new dentist
office called "Smile Avenue" has opened in the
long-vacant building next to the old Jay's automobile
dealership.
- Four
women from the Fiesta Salon have formed their own salon,
the Grand Hair Parlor, now open in the old R.R.
Passenger House building on Park Ave.
- The
new Butler
Body
Shop is now officially open. Also, a sign at the
same location was up briefly that said "Coldwater Car
Detail Shop coming soon," but it was taken down shortly
thereafter so plans for that secondary business may have
been scrapped.
- With
the elections coming up, parties have chosen their
temporary headquarters: Republicans in the former Action
Printing Store (where the Democrats once were,
ironically), Democrats in the old Southern Michigan
Karate building.
Moved...
- Coldwater Pipe &
Supply has moved from 85 Jay St. across the street to 90 Jay
St.
Goodbye...
- The
Save-a-Lot grocery store has liquidated its inventory
and closed (a loss of 14 jobs for Coldwater).

Community
Bank
has
closed
its
Marshall
St.
walk-in
branch office. The ATM and drive-thru, however, will
remain open.

Tunes - the new location on Marshall St. - has
mysteriously vanished, and the building is for rent
again.

Materials
Handling

no
sign
on
the
windows,
but
Blitz
Hobbysports has completely emptied its store and appears
closed for good.
- All
summer long, the Big Eaze has seemingly been closed, yet
no signs on the doors. Finally Heritage Realty now has a
"for sale" sign in the front window.
Other News...
- Apparently the Sahara
Nights Buffets was closed for a while, then re-opened in
early August "under new management."
- Beltone Hearing Aid
Service has apparently been sold to Phil and Kathy Wirtz,
who have renamed the business Wirtz Hearing Aid Centers,
Inc.
- The Southern Michigan
Bank & Trust Conference Center at 2 W. Chicago St. has
been renamed the Southern
Michigan Bank & Trust Lending Center.
- Style Studio, which a
year ago was renamed the In-Style School of Cosmetology, has
now been renamed back to Style Studio.
- Frontier Communications
has taken over Verizon's land line service in the Coldwater
area; all the vehicles around the Verizon service building
downtown (not open to public) now say "Frontier".
Spring 2010

Other News...
- National City Bank in
Coldwater (and nationwide) has been renamed PNC
Bank.
- Econolodge, which had just
been renamed Economy Inn, has been renamed again, indicating
that they have picked up a new franchise. The new name is Rodeway
Inn. They have also repainted their facility to match
the new franchise colors.
- Phil's
Driving
School,
LLC,
is
renting
the
old
Video
Time
store (by Felpausch)
for its classes this summer, which start June 7th. I am
not sure if the school will be using the store
long-term.
- Coldwater
Gun & Pawn has finished remodeling the
exterior of the old Mr. Tunes building; only the old Mr.
Tunes lit sign remains (not shown in photo).
- The
Boat
House
Restaurant remodeled and expanded their kitchen in
April.
Winter 2010
Hello...
- A
new business Coldwater
Gun & Pawn opened in late March in the old Mr.
Tunes location on Chicago Street. As shown in the photo,
the large street windows were replaced in mid-December
with smaller windows. The old Mr. Tunes awning still has
not yet been replaced.
- Michigan's Chemical
Bank opened a new branch in Coldwater on March
29th in the location of the recently-closed Coldwater Banking
Center (by the CHC
Community Care & Conference Center).
- Build-out
is
underway
for
a
new
restaurant
in
the
old Big Apple
Bagels location: "The
Sahara Nights Buffet" (middle eastern cuisine).
- A
new "Sportsman's
Shack" bait and tackle store has opened in the old
Midwest Fleet building (695 W. Chicago, next to C/W
Marine & Power).
- The old
Salvation Army store by CVS has been totally
refurbished into some nice offices, but there's no
indication yet of what the new business will be.
Moved...
Goodbye...
- According
to
the
Grand
Haven
Tribune,
Michigan
Gas is closing its Coldwater office (70 Sauk River
Dr.) on March 12. However, I am not sure of the accuracy
of this report.
- Three
MyColdwater.com
users
have
reported
that
Ohio
Marine,
Inc., on US-12 west of Coldwater, has closed
sometime over the winter.
- The
Coldwater branch of Sturgis Bank & Trust, a.k.a. Coldwater Banking
Center, has closed. However, Chemical
Bank has come in to immediately take its place.
- Martin
Transportation
Systems (MTS) has closed its Coldwater terminal.
- Maude's
Quality Used Furniture has gone out of business.
- Carla
Quimby,
a
popular
local
Stampin'
Up!
rubber
stamp
demonstrator, has decided not to continue her
business. However Kathe Deck is available as
another local Stampin'
Up! rubber stamp demonstrator.
Other News...
- In April 2010, National
City
Bank in Coldwater will be renamed PNC Bank. In fact,
the signs have apparently already been replaced, with bags
being placed over them saying "National City" until the
official unveil.
- Econolodge has apparently
dropped its franchise (bags still covering the old signs as
of late March) and, according to their answering service,
has been renamed Economy
Inn.
- A
new business Hippy
2 Xtreme opened very briefly in the old
Manpower
office (499 Marshall St.), offering TShirts,
candles, tobacco accessories, etc. However, Coldwater
police also found marijauna paraphernalia in the store.
Although Michigan voters recently approved the use of
marijanua for medical reasons, the sale of paraphernalia
within the city limits of Coldwater violates a local
ordinance. On March 7th, protesters were seen on
Marshall St. protesting the ordinance. No doubt this
will be a hot local issue for months to come. In the
meantime, Hippy 2 Extreme relocated to U.S. 12 near
Quincy [then in May or June it left Branch County and
relocated again to Battle Creek].
Fall 2009
Hello...
Moved...
Goodbye...
- The
Coldwater
Big Brothers / Big Sisters office has
closed. Upon further inquiry, I received the following
thoughtful statement from Sarah Wyss, Director of
Marketing: "At this time, we have taken some steps towards
'right sizing' our organization to better serve our
Michigan and Indiana communities. Our mentoring program
and the people’s lives we impact are most important and we
are doing all that we can to keep that as our top
priority. Therefore, we have repositioned our spending to
support the staff who make the matches and monitor the
safety of these matches. However, it is very important to
know that even though the office in Coldwater is no longer
there, our service to the Michigan community is still very
much active. We have three counties in Michigan including
St. Joseph, Branch and Hillsdale that we continue to serve
on a daily basis. Our Match Support Team remains
involved in supporting the matches and will continue to do
so. Big Brothers Big Sisters is excited to continue to
grow and serve the children in south central Michigan."
- Without warning, "Action
Promotional
Printing" has apparently closed and vacated its
Chicago St. store.
- Burns
Auto Company has apparently closed. However,
according to the owner of Crossroads
Alignment
& Repair, who owns part of the same lot, used
cars will still be periodically offered for sale on the
lot from him and his clients.
- According to their
answering machine, Preferred
Family & Womens Care PC has closed, with Dr.
Custer relocating to the Family Health Center of Battle
Creek. I checked the office again on 12/7, and it still
looks "lived in" with the fish tank still going.
Presumably it is taking a while to fully shut down the
office.
- With the trial now
over, Budd's
Awnings has closed their auxiliary Chicago St.
storefront (making way for KC
Small Engine Repair to move in). Budd's main
location on Michigan Ave. will definitely remain
open.
Other News...
- Style Studio has been renamed
In-Style
School of Cosmetology.
- The exterior façade of Taxes
Latino has
finally been painted - an interesting gold color - and the
building is starting to look very nice.
- Time Services (next to Mancino's)
has been renamed Elwood
Staffing.
- The large street windows at the old Mr. Tunes
are being replaced with smaller windows as part of
preparation for a new business.
- Instructions painted on wall of
vacant suite next to Goodwill
suggest that Goodwill may be preparing to expand into
that suite.
Summer 2009
Hello...
- A new business called "Action
Promotional Printing" has sprung up in the former
Branch County Democrats office (117 W. Chicago St.).
- Another new business
called "Maxon's
Marine
& Storage" has moved into the former Brickyard
Motorsports location (682 E. Chicago).
- A new business Hudson
Business Services (Accountant) has moved into the
Coldwater Executive Suites, suite 2D. (Creative Web Design
has moved to 2C-1.)
- After some work this
summer fixing up the property that was once Neptune's
Cavern (before they moved to Willowbrook Rd.), Tailgator's
Bar and Grill has opened downtown. Interestingly,
they have inherited Neptune's
Cavern's phone number, but they do not have the same
owners.
- The refurbishing of the old Kmart location is now
complete (as of beginning of Sept.) and will henceforth be
known as the
CHC Community Care & Conference Center
(CHCCCCC). The first two medical offices to relocate there
are the Substance
Treatment
& Referral Services and the Family
Medicine
Clinic. A new connecting street to the rest to the
CHC campus is currently under construction.
- A different
entrepreneur has purchased the rights to open an Any Time
Fitness franchise in Coldwater, and he has apparently
selected the strip
mall by Walmart
as its location. No word yet on when it might open.
- "Northwoods East
Healthy Deli" has opened inside of Great
Lakes Health and Fitness. According to Angie
Johnson, "It has low cal, high protein sandwiches/wraps
and salads for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Available to
the public and has a nice cafe area with wifi to eat in."
- Nutrition
Express has opened in the Strip Mall next to the Red Roof Inn.
Moved...
Goodbye...
- Neptune's
Cavern has suddenly closed without any warning nor
any sign on their door. Even more interestingly, their
phone number has been transferred to the new Tailgator's
Bar and Grill downtown (under different ownership).
One would assume that Neptune's is closed for good;
however, a request was made to the city of Coldwater to
move their liquor license from their current location to
the old Reese
Automotive building. The proposed new location,
though, is very surprising as the building is more of a
garage and would need major renovation work to turn it
into a restaurant. (The same property was also previously
reported to be purchased by a developer to be turned into
a new strip mall.) We will just have to wait and see what
happens.
- The owner of Brickyard
Motorsports has decided to close and sell his
business to Planet
Powersports (located nearby). The Brickyard location
will close and business will be consolidated at Planet
Powersports.
- Wood's
Auto Care Center (including Wood's
Safety Service) is going out of business. Their
partner, Westside
Auto Detailing, will remain open.
- Flicker's,
Inc., and Osage
Glass Studio & Gallery are both going out of
business and will be closing soon.
Other News...
Spring 2009
Hello...
- The new Buffalo
Wild Wings restaurant is now open (as of May 11th).
- A new doctor of
internal medicine, Jeffrey
Russell, D.O., has moved into the building where Bosco
Chan (Gentle Dentist) resides. The new practice is
called Coldwater Crossing Internal Medicine.
- A new business called Burns
Auto Company has moved into the store where CW Ink LLC Tattoos and
Piercings used to be. Burns Auto Company is
offering affordable used cars.
- An interesting new
business called Aunt
Molly's BBQ Shack opened on June 3rd. It is located
in a small "shack" next to Riverside
Motors (by the river on Division St.) and is
carry-out only (or picnic tables).
- According to the Daily
Reporter, the Kerr
Building renovation downtown is NOT dead, just
moving along very slow. Click
here to follow the full story from when it was
proposed over a year ago.
- Earthroots,
Inc., a body balancing and health food provider, Mindy Fuchs,
a counselor, Sensible
Health Alternatives, a massage therapy and
reconnection healing office, and Freije
Treatment
Systems, a commercial water treatment systems
designer, have opened recently in the Coldwater
Executive
Suites (suites 1E, 3G and 3B, respectively)
Moved...
- Jay's
Pontiac Buick GMC Truck was sold last fall but the
new owners kept the business open. The new owners must be
Royal Chevrolet Olds
Cadillac because they've now shut the old
location down and consolidated operations at the Royal
location, which
has now been renamed Royal
Auto Group.
Goodbye...
- Big
Apple Bagels has gone out of business. A sign on the
door thanks all past customers for their business over the
years.
- The The
Education
Station has gone out of business. Their sign has
been taken off, revealing the previous business The Museum
Gallery behind it, which is confusing because The
Museum Gallery's current and correct location is one
block away and on the other side of the street.
- Adventure
Travel has closed its store in Coldwater and has
moved to Quincy.
- American
General
Financial Services has also closed its Coldwater
Office and has moved to Angola.
- The Centennial wireless
dealer K-Wireless
has vacated its store just as quietly as it opened just a
few months ago.
- With Burns
Auto Company moving in to their old store, CW Ink LLC Tattoos and
Piercings has diappeared.
- The "Counseling and
Consulting" therapist in the Coldwater Executive
Suites has retired. However, a different counselor, Mindy
Fuchs, has moved into that office.
Other News...
- Work
continues on the old
Kmart location, being refurbished by the Coldwater
Health
Center. It is scheduled to be complete by the time
of a planned open house on July 31st (picture at left is
from June 19th).
- Work also continues on the exterior façade of Taxes
Latino.
Now that tax season is over, Taxes Latino is temporarily
closed until the building is complete (signs have recently
been taken down and "cerrado" [closed] is on a piece of
paper pasted in the window). [Taxes Latino re-opened later
in the summer.]
- Bobilya
Chrysler-Plymouth-Dodge-Jeep is apparently not on the
list of the 789 dealers that bankrupt Chrysler is suddenly
closing, which is good news.
- Nutritech
Feed
Service has started a "Batavia
Farmer's
Market" at their location (between Coldwater and
Bronson - still within Coldwater zip code) which will be
every Saturday from 8am - 2pm.
Winter 2009
Hello...
- The former Capital Auto
building has been purchased already (amazingly fast
considering the current recession) and is now the proud
home of PVS
Automotive,
Inc. PVS has also taken over the business of Hannah's Auto Shine
which is now known as PVS
Automotive Service, Inc., Detail Division.
- Pave Trucking has
opened a new terminal at 425 Jay Street.
- Speed
Automotive has taken over the location of the former
Ken Day Motor Sales
at the Clay-Division Y Junction.
- Yet another automotive
business has opened: Coldwater
Auto Service, at the former Walters Building Supply on
US-12 east of town.
- A Buffalo
Wild Wings restaurant is planned for half of the
former Fashion
Bug location with an expected opening date of May
1st, according to the Daily Reporter. UPDATE, March 2009:
A contractor sign has finally been posted at the site with
"Buffalo Wild Wings - Coming Soon" on it, and work has
begun inside. It looks as if the new restaurant may take
up only half of the former Fashion Bug with the remaining
half to be rented separately, but it's not clear yet.
UPDATE, April 2009: The
front of the building has been painted bright yellow and
the new sign has gone up.
- A new business called Stewart's
Gallery is moving in to the vacant building on North
Hanchett St. next to the former Casey's
Antiques. They are scheduled to open on February
3rd.
- In the same building,
another new business called The
DBT Center of Michigan has opened. This is a new
branch office of a main office in Lansing which
specializes in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Eye
Movement Desensitization Reprocessing.
- A business called International
Gold
& Silver Buyers has set up shop in the former Advance Employment
location next to Cottage
Inn Pizza. With the economy in recession and gold
prices near record highs, selling
gold for quick cash is becoming very popular right
now.
- A new outside banner
confirms that the new business in the old Piefer's Grand
Rental Station building on Marshall Street is indeed "Taxes
Latino", and it is now open ("abierto"). Most of the
renovation work this winter has focused on the interior,
so most likely they will be doing the remaining exterior
work in the late spring.
- A couple of new
attorneys have started practicing. Benjamin
Jewell is working in Jack
Lintner's office, and Kirk
Kashian is working next to Richard
Colbeck.
- An entrepreneur from
Missouri is considering opening an Any Time Fitness center
in Coldwater, according to a representative from Any Time
Fitness Franchise Support. However, it is not known where
or when it will open.
Moved...
Goodbye...
- Web's
Strings and Things has gone out of business. January
31st, the day of the Ice
Fest, was to be their last day of business, but
their store was already completely vacated and their
guitar sign was already taken down.
- The owner of Ken Day Motor Sales
has succeeded in selling the business and will retire. Speed
Automotive has taken over (as mentioned in "Hello"
above).
- The recession has
really hurt northern Coldwater which, just prior to the
recession, was experiencing a revival. Three businesses in
Fairfield Plaza have suddenly closed: Video
Max, The
Kitchen
Shop, and Identity
Marketing.
- Back
to Nature is going out of business soon and is
currently having inventory reduction sales. They will
probably close their doors in early March.
- Nearby, Reese
Automotive has gone out of business. The site has
been purchased by local developer Klein
Group, LLC, who plans to raze the building and build
another new strip mall!
The Klein Group also leases space in the now-mostly-empty
strip mall with Back to Nature, so they must be
anticipating a swift end to the recession and a big
turnaround in the local economy.
- The Branch
County
Democrats have finally taken down their signs and
vacated their temporary headquarters on Chicago Street.
- News Flash:
MyColdwater.com has just learned (March 2009) that The
Education
Station will be going out of business soon. Expect
"25% off" sales in March.
- Mattress
Land is also going out of business. They are
currently having an inventory liquidation sale, and they
plan to close their doors at the end of March.
Other News...
- Coldwater residents can
expect to see some major changes to their wireless service
this year. The two federally
licensed
carriers are Alltel and Centennial. Alltel has just
been purchased by Verizon Wireless, and Centennial is
expected to be purchased by AT&T later this year.
(Sprint also operates in the Coldwater area via
arrangement with one of the two carriers.) The summary is
that Coldwater will no longer be in a "fringe" area but
will soon be part of the two largest networks in the
country.
- Shemel's
Carpet
and Interiors has taken over the neighboring
vacant
store (the one that housed the Branch County Republican Party
Headquarters last fall) for an expanded showroom.
- Aleris,
heavily dependent on the troubled auto industry, laid off
over 100 workers in January. Now, in February, a few have
been called back to work, but now Aleris has filed Chapter
11 bankruptcy protection. They will remain open while they
"reorganize."
- The Coldwater
Health
Center has finally started its renovations of
the old
Kmart location (late Feb. 2009); if you drive by you
will see that the façade is being completely
redone.
Fall 2008
Hello...
- A new video rental
store called Family
Video is now open in the old Blockbuster / Halloween USA
location.
- Papa
Murphy's
Pizza ("take and bake" pizza) is now open.
- Muffin Avra and Valerie
Caldwell, formerly of Total
E. Clips, are opening a new business called Bella
Vie Day Spa, with an open house scheduled for
November 1st from 1pm to 6pm. The new business is located
on Michigan Ave. south of
Walgreens.
- The new Edward
Jones office in the refurbished, old Big Tomato
location is now open. Amazingly, this is the fourth Edward
Jones office in Coldwater.
- Another Centennial
Wireless independent dealer called K-Wireless
has quietly
opened a shop in the strip mall by Super
Liquor II.
Moved...
Goodbye...
- Majestic
Video has folded less than two months after it
opened in October (perhaps due to competition from the
newly opened Family Video
or perhaps due to the economic recession).
- Capital Auto has gone out of
business.
- The New
Hope DRC office downtown has closed, and their phone
has been disconnected.
- Now that the November
elections are over, the Branch County Republicans have closed
their office downtown.
- The Michigan
legislature has just approved a proposal (December 2008)
from Gov. Granholm to close Camp
Branch in an attempt to trim the state's budget.
Sadly, about 100 Coldwater jobs will be lost. The close
date is set for April 1st. The adjacent Florence
Crane
Lakeland Correctional Facility will remain open (as
far as we can tell).
Other News...
- The Jay's
Pontiac Buick GMC Truck dealership has been sold. Most
likely the new owner will continue the business, but this is
not known for sure. In the meantime, Jay's is having an
inventory clearance sale.
- Halloween USA will not be
returning to Coldwater this year, according to the Halloween
USA website.
- The entire parking lot in
front of CVS/Pharmacy
is being torn up. It is not clear yet if they're just
re-doing the parking lot or if they're going to build. It
would seem though that they're spending an unusually large
amount of money on the project. We'll watch and see what
they do next. UPDATE, November 2008: It's just about done,
and it's just a parking lot upgrade (but a nice one).
- With the Branch
County Habitat for Humanity moving out of the old
Kmart location, the Coldwater
Health
Center, which now owns the facility, plans some major
renovations. Baker
College, however, will stay there.
- Fiesta Hair & Tanning has
been renamed Fiesta
Salons.
- Pizza Hut has recently been
changed to a Pizza
Hut / Wing Street combination restaurant.
- The old
Piefer's Grand Rental Station building on Marshall
Street is being refurbished, possibly indicating that a new
tenant may be moving in. A sign on the door says "Taxes
Latino", but it is unclear whether this is a new business
name or just a recently uncovered remnant from a past
tenant. It does seem to be a new door, though.
Summer 2008
Hello...
- The Daily
Reporter and Yahoo Hot Jobs have recently run a
classified ad for a management team for Papa
Murphy's Pizza in Coldwater.
Coldwater does not (yet) have a Papa Murphys, so this
could indicate that a new store is in the works. The ad
implied it would be open in September. UPDATE, late August
2008: Yes! A store is indeed opening soon, and the
location has been revealed: in the same strip mall where Fashion
Bug just closed.
- On July 15th, a new
Christian radio station started broadcasting from right
here in Coldwater: WCWB
- 90.1 FM. Not a whole lot is known about the new
station, but here's what I've been able to find out:
According to FCC records, the station has been planned
since October 1999. The callsign was assigned about a year
ago, and it has just started transmitting. The station is
owned by Michiana Christian Broadcasters, Inc. Despite the
name, the station appears to be a 0.25kW low strength
station covering just the immediate Coldwater area (we
might assume there are plans in the future for increasing
the power or adding translator stations for nearby towns).
The transmitter is located near the airport and is being
maintained by Munn-Reese.
The station is broadcasting programming from the BBN
Christian radio network.
- Yea!! Coldwater is no
longer without a pet supply store (because of the imminent
closing of Pet
Supplies "Plus"). On August 1st a new Tiffanie's
Feeders
N' Eaters opened at the former Top Deck location by Tibbit's
Theater. It is obviously a smaller store than Pet
Supplies "Plus", focusing mainly on live feeders and pet
food, but we are glad to have the new store in town.
- This summer a new "drive thru restaurant" has
been constructed in front of the new "salmon
colored strip mall" in front of Home Depot. It is a Biggby coffee shop
with drive-thru, and it opened on September 23. (Biggby is
a Michigan owned chain that used to be called Beaners.)
- The Branch
County
Democrats have opened a new office in the former Cash-n-Dash
building next to Dally
Tire Company. Grand opening: Thursday, August 28, at
5pm.
- The Branch County
Republicans have also opened a new office, with
theirs located in the former Bible Study Resource Center downtown.
- Stoagie's
Family Room Cafe has finally opened (September). This new restaurant is
located on the other side of Jefferson Street from the Citgo
gas station.
- A building permit
posted on the former Big
Tomato submarine sandwhich shop indicates that it
will be converted into a new Edward
Jones office.
Moved...
- The Branch
ISD Early Education office that was next to Save-a-Lot
has moved (as of June 30th) to 200 Bishop Ave.
- SM
Assessing, having moved out of their 13 S. Monroe
office to make way for the new El-A
Taquila restaurant (of which work has still not yet
been started despite the work permit), has found a new
home at 20 W. Chicago (next to Shemel's).
- Snyder's
Drop-Off
Laundry & Dry Clean has moved... slightly. They
are still in the same plaza by CVS/Pharmacy
but have moved to the old Salvation Army store right next
to CVS. UPDATE,
August 2008: The reason for the move has now become
obvious: The old building has now been completely razed!
It's curious that the landlord would find it cheaper to
raze the building than to attempt to find tenants. But the
end result may be kind of nice - it will expand the CVS /
Synder's parking lot and make it more "open" and less
cramped.
- The Budd
Insurance Agency has moved from West Chicago St. to
Suite C of the new strip
mall by Dairy
Queen on Divison Street. Business
Impressions, which was in Suite C, has moved to
formerly vacant Suite D.
Goodbye...
- Fashion
Bug has now closed. One MyColdwater.com user had
talked with the manager who told her that the Michigan
market is not doing well.
- Pet
Supplies "Plus" has now closed. This is also a big
surprise as the pet supply store chain as a whole is doing
well (and adding new stores). The remainder of the
Coldwater store's inventory that was not sold during their
20% off sales in their last days has been moved to the Pet
Supplies "Plus" in Angola [which, ironically, in 2009 also
closed]. Thankfully, a new pet supply store has opened to
replace this one (see "Hello" section).
- Bradco
Supply / Wickes Lumber has closed and the property
is for sale.
- As mentioned earlier,
the old building next
to CVS/Pharmacy
has been razed.
All the former tenants have found new locations except for
The
Guitar Studio, which gave me a "this number has been
disconnected" when I tried calling them. So it is assumed
that The Guitar Studio is out of business.
- The Victorian
Mansion
Inn (restaurant and bed & breakfast) has closed
again. The phone has been disconnected and there is a "for
sale" sign out front.
- The Bible Study Resource
Center is apparently closed as their web site has
disappeared and the Branch
County
Republicans have moved into their old store.
- A MyColdwater.com user
has reported that the Boat
House Restaurant is now closed as of September 1st.
Normally this restaurant is open year round though with
more limited hours in the winter, so this is possibly a
permanent notice. I am trying to contact them to find out
what the fate of the restaurant is.
- Advance Employment has closed.
- NOT CLOSED YET: The
owner of Ken
Day Motor Sales has a "for sale" sign on his
property as he is looking to sell his business, but in the
meantime he is still OPEN for business. Other businesses
that have posted "for sale" signs but apparently are still
open:
Other Changes...
- The Coldwater
Free Methodist Church just opened a new 19,000
square foot expansion to their facility which they are
calling the Family Center.
- It is now late in the
summer and there has been almost no work whatsoever on the
major redevelopment at the Dunham's
property (which I
had called "Project L"), despite all the approvals from
the city (including a special use permit). Since it is so
late in the construction season to be starting such as
major project, I can only assume that the plans have been
cancelled. Perhaps it is due to economic conditions. For
example, almost every major strip mall in Coldwater has
vacancies right now. Also, part of the plans included a
new drive-thru coffee shop, but a competing coffee shop is
already being built by Home Depot (see "Project H" near
the top of this document). UPDATE: MyColdwater.com has
learned that the brand
new Starbucks coffee shop in nearby Angola,
Indiana, is scheduled to be closed. It is possible that
Starbucks planned to expand to Coldwater, too, at the
Dunham's property, but had to cancel due to corporate
downsizing.
- Some of the parking lot
concrete at the vacant old
gas station property at 399 Marshall St. has been
replaced. Why this was done is a total mystery because, as
far as we know, the property is not up for sale, nor is
there any indication that a new gas station or other store
will be opened there. According to public records, the
property is owned by Bitler Investment Venture V. LLC et
al. (though the taxes are paid by the Speedway gas
company). UPDATE: Mystery solved: The property is now for
sale as per a new sign on the property. So the concrete
was to make it more attractive to a potential buyer.
- Another surprise
parking lot repaving is at the Big
Tomato submarine sandwich shop which is out of
business. A search of public records indicated that the
owner of the property owns a few other properties around
town, so one could assume that the Big Tomato rented the
property and that the property owner is trying to make the
property look more attractive to prospective tenants.
- The major Taco
Bell interior remodel is now complete, and both the
drive-thru and dine-in areas are open again.
- Pizza
Hut is repainting their exterior to a goldenrod
color.
Spring 2008
Hello...
- Sirens
Bar & Grill (formerly The Firehouse Restaurant and Saloon) has now re-opened. The
owners have painted some interesting murals on the
front and back of the building to stimulate interest.
- Workers proudly erected a
sign for Stoagie's
Family Room Cafe on April 8th. They did not know when the new
restaurant will open, but it looks like it will be very
soon. It is located on the other side of Jefferson Street
from the Citgo
gas station.
- The new Great
Lakes Health & Fitness Center (next to Great
Lakes
Chiropractic) has now opened.
- The new Cartridges
Unlimited store next to Radio
Shack is now open. Cartridges Unlimited is a
national commercial printer cartridges recycler that is
now expanding into retail, and the Coldwater store is one
of its first four retail stores (the others being in
Indiana and North Carolina).
- A new computer sales
and service center called The
Sales Tag is opening soon on Division Street in the
former Amerifirst
location. The small office will be a local retail
extension of a locally owned, substantial online business.
A new sign has just been put up but as of May 1st the
office is not yet officially opened.
- A second tenant is now
in the new "salmon
colored
strip mall" (the first was Dollar
Tree). It is a Sprint
cell
phone retail shop.
- In Dollar Tree's old store by the
freeway, Mattress
Land has opened.
- The plans to open a new
"McClougan's Pub"
in the old
Creative
Kitchens location on Chicago Street have probably
been scrapped. Several months have gone by since the plans
were first reported, and there is still a "for lease" sign
in the window.
- On the other hand, a
surprise new restaurant may be in the works at 13 S.
Monroe in the former SM
Assessing office next to Sirens.
The window shows a permit (issued May 8) to convert the
property to a new El-A
Taquila restaurant.
- Meanwhile, the nearby
mystery bakery in the old Just Bead It location is now revealed as Melanie's
and will be a cake shop. Their new business card says
"custom designed cakes and delicious baked treats for all
occasions." In the window, sample wedding cakes are
attracting attention.
- In the northern part of
the city, braving the recent construction on Marshall Rd.
which is disrupting traffic, Adventure
Travel has announced its grand opening. The new
store is located near Family
Dollar.
- On the other side of
the parking lot, a new J
& M Tattoo shop has opened in the old Cornwell
Computer location. (Note: The backlit sign has not yet
been changed.)
- The owner of the
buildings hosting Dunham's,
Cottage
Inn Pizza, Rent-a-Center,
Advance Employment,
and the former Blockbuster
/ Halloween USA revealed some redevelopment plans
at a February Coldwater Planning Commission meeting: The
Dunham's building will be expanded west and south,
resulting in a new L-shaped strip mall. The existing
Cottage Inn Pizza, Rent-a-Center, and Advance Employment
tenants will relocate there, then the old building housing
those tenants will be razed. Finally, a new drive-thru
coffee shop will be constructed on the old Hot 'n Now
location. With the old Rent-a-Center building gone, there
will still be room for a shortcut to the Comfort Inn (as
well as a path to Benedict's
Steakhouse). The plans were approved but no work as
been started as of yet.
Goodbye...
- The Big Tomato
submarine sandwhich shop has suddenly closed without
warning. Despite being locally owned, in a historical
building, and having fresh ingredients, it apparently
could not compete with the three Subway sandwhich shops in
town. A sign on the window thanks local residents for
their business and support.
- The Koepfler Family
Chiropractor and the Purely You Salon & Spa (both
located in the same strip mall) have closed. A sign on the
chiropractor office indicates that one of the Koepflers
will now be working at Great
Lakes
Chiropractic.
Other Changes...
- Capital Transmission is
now known as Capital
Auto.
- Taco
Bell is currently undergoing an interior remodel,
and only the drive thru is open.
- VIP
Auto and also the Lamplighter
Lounge are both apparently undergoing major building
expansions.
- Willowbrook
Plaza and the hillside
plaza
extension are finally getting the much-needed
pavement repairs. All businesses are remaining open during
the project, even though you may have to park farther away
than usual.
Winter 2008
Hello...
- The new Hampton
Inn is finally open - and a week or two ahead of
schedule of the predicted March 15th opening date.
- The G.W. Allen
coffee shop that closed last fall was sold and has just
re-opened [Mid-February] as "The
Big Eaze" featuring deli sandwiches, hot dogs,
wraps, salads, ice cream, and coffee.
- The Firehouse Restaurant
and Saloon is apparently being renamed "Sirens
Bar & Grill", and will re-open soon.
- Next door, some sort of
new
bakery is opening in the old Just Bead It location, as
advertised on the store window, but no name is yet given
for the new business.
- The Bible Study Resource
Center has opened downtown, a new nonprofit
organization "dedicated to serving Coldwater and the
surrounding area by providing materials to facilitate deep
and personal study of the Word of God." It is located in
the formerly vacant storefront next to Shemel's.
- According to the
Coldwater DDA, the old
Creative Kitchens location on Chicago Street will be
renovated, and a new "McClougan's Pub" will open there sometime
later this spring. [Did not happen]
- According to the Cartridges
Unlimited website, a new retail store will be
opening in Coldwater. As of late February, there is a
banner in front of the Radio
Shack
strip mall advertising the store, but no apparent activity
in either of the two empty stores.
Moved...
- With student enrollment
steadily increasing, Baker
College has now moved to a newly renovated portion
of the old Kmart building. The new facility will
accommodate up to 120 students.
Goodbye...
Other
Changes...
- The newly reopened Victorian
Mansion Inn now has its restaurant open for
business.
- As of March 1st, Lentz
USA Service Center is now U.S.
12 Auto Repair. No longer part of the Lentz chain,
it is now locally owned and is offering general auto
repairs.
- Ed-de's restaurant is
now known as Jeannie's
Diner.
- Extermital Termite
& Pest Control is now known as Evergreen
Pest
Control.
- Avra Warehousing is now known
as Leader
Logistics
Group.
- Lockwood
Community
Church's new sanctuary, which will give it more
space for its growing attendance, is finally scheduled to
open on March 9th, assuming all occupancy permits are
approved.
Fall 2007
Hello...
- The exterior of the new hotel
on Willowbrook Rd. is almost complete, as of November.
According to the city engineering department, it will be a
Hampton Inn.
- The new
strip mall in front of Home Depot has just been
painted an interesting salmon color and is near ready for
new businesses to move in. MyColdwater.com has just
learned (12/13/07) that one of the new tenants will be Dollar Tree,
which is looking to move there to expand its floor space.
- Sears
has just opened [December] a dealer store in Coldwater, at
the previous Rent-a-Center
location. Appliances, electronics, tools, and more will be
available. MyColdwater.com has posted the new store's
information and phone number even before Sears.Com!
- Over two years in the
making, Stoagie's
Family Room Cafe is still set to open in 2008.
The parking lot is finished, and new tables can be seen
inside. It will be located on the other side of Jefferson
Street from the Citgo
gas station.
- Tailgaitor's
Sports Bar & Grill is also set to open in 2008
downtown in the old location of Neptune's Cavern. [Did not
happen]
- The Victorian
Mansion
Inn, a wonderful historic building on Division
Street, has just re-opened [late November].
- The Firehouse Restaurant
and Saloon, which had closed, is currently under
renovation and is set to re-open as a restaurant at some
point in the future.
Moved...
Goodbye...
- The awesome coffee shop
G.W. Allen
has sadly closed.
- The Just
Bead It shop on Monroe Street also closed this fall,
but its owners are taking the shop elsewhere in the state
(full details were located on a sign on their door).
- Also downtown, the
Coldwater office of Chicago Title has closed due to the
depressed housing market conditions, forcing customers to
drive to their other regional office in Sturgis.
- The Sauk
Trail Custom Cycles shop and Coldwater
Ink tatoo parlor mysteriously disappeared in mid
November... not just closed shop, but the entire building
is missing! Update [early December]: ReMax is offering the
property for sale. NOTE: Coldwater Ink should not be
confused with CW
Ink Tattoos & Piercings, a separate business,
which is still open.
- And of course Halloween USA,
the seasonal Halloween store, has come and gone, leaving
the old
Blockbuster
building empty again.
Other Changes...
- Wal-Mart
is nearing the completion of a major interior remodeling.
- Lockwood
Community
Church's new sanctuary, which will give it more
space for its growing attendance, is almost complete, and
the parking lot has just been paved [late November].
However, occupancy of the new space will not be allowed
until January.
