Under the sidewalk
Image for Entry 1303725556If you ever wondered what was under the sidewalk at the Coldwater Executive Suites, now you know (see picture). Not sure what they're doing that required all of this concrete to be cut out, but we'll observe and see. By the way, my wife was having lunch downtown last Thursday when the lanes were reduced on Chicago St. and witnessed two accidents. Traffic was backed up for several blocks. Please, be careful and SLOW DOWN during construction. Consider using Pearl St. as a detour.

Old Postula store razed
Image for Entry 1296491639Just as suspected, the old Postula Computer Services building has been razed. The Daily Reporter managed to capture a photo during the razing process: click here to see it. The article also confirms the firefighting training and the future plans for the property.

The Ice Fest's cold start
Image for Entry 1296357803I arrived downtown with the family this morning at 11:30am, along with lots of other people, with good weather (not super windy or cold), and... where were the ice sculptures? I inquired at one of the local businesses and discovered that the ice was delivered very early this morning, and the workers also arrived on time, but for some reason no work was started until 11 (the Ice Fest began at 10). So by noon only two sculptures were complete. WTVB was there but then apparently left. But State Farm helped save the morning with its cute Teddy Bear and ice scraper giveaway; Wal-Mart's semi truck was also there as well as a dog rescue. My guess is that there was a bit of miscommunication, which was promptly corrected after lunch when the pace picked up and more workers were out and larger crowds gathered to watch the work. The day was saved!

What happened to Postula Computer Services?
Image for Entry 1295440356Late last year, the empty lot next to Postula Computer Services (by McDonald's) sold at auction. The owner of Postula didn't take his signs down, so what I didn't realize is that he had also sold his store and had moved out. At least not until my wife spotted the gaping holes in the roof and all the windows busted out. Then yesterday I spotted a ladder fire truck by the store, so I went to check it out. A note on the back of the store says, "Attention! Dear Customers of Postula Computer Services, I have sold this property, and will begin working out of my home as of December 6, 2010. If you still have merchandise here that needs to be picked up, please call me immediately at (517) 279-9551. Nothing else will change other than I will be picking up and delivering the systems to your home or business. Thank you for your continued business over the years. -- Nick Postula." In looking at the store, it doesn't look like an accident or arson, so my guess is that it's being used for firefighting training. Regardless, with the utter disregard for the damage to the building, it looks like it is almost certain to be razed. (It is a nice house, but just outside of the Historic District, so it's not super-old and won't have restrictions on tearing it down.) The lot is in a prime location and might end up with a new fast food joint on it. On the other hand, the economy hasn't been good lately, and there's another empty lot by Rite Aid (very close by) that is currently for sale but has been sitting empty for years. It will be interesting to see what happens.

New "Massage" category
By request, I have added a new category "Massage." There are enough businesses in Coldwater that fit this category, and it's a better fit than "Barber & Beauty Salons" or "Specialists / Personal Help" where the businesses previously were.
